Ravichandran Ashwin became the second quickest to take fastest 200 test wickets in cricket history. India is playing its 500th test in which Ashwin stepped on this milestone by dismissing New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson at the Green Park in Kanpur.
Ashwin made his debut against West Indies in 2011, now he is behind the legendary Australian leg-spinner Clarrie Grimmett, who played 37 tests in the period of 1925 – 1936. Clarrie reached 200 wicket landmark in his 36th test match. Now Ashwin is the quickest to take 200-wicket in last 80 years.
Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis and Australia’s Dennis Lillee who both took 38 Tests to reach 200 wicket mark.Dale Steyn of South Africa took 39 tests to get 200 wickets mark.
Ashwin started this Test series against New Zealand at 193 wickets. He took four wickets in New Zealand’s first innings and six wickets in the second innings, a total of 10 wickets to achieve this milestone.
The 30-year-old from Chennai is ranked third in ICC world Test bowlers ranking behind Dale Steyn of South Africa and England’s James Anderson.
While 12 more Tests to go in this season, Ashwin said, “I think it’s too early to talk about my achievements I have a long way to go”.
